Every year, I look forward to sharing our favorite board games for date night, and this list always feels especially timely as Valentineโs Day approaches. In busy seasons of parenting, it can be easy to let connection slip into the background, but some of our most meaningful moments together happen right at home, around the table.
Board game date nights have been a simple, steady way for us to make everyday life feel a little more special, even when schedules are full and energy is low. This list includes our favorite games from the past year and some classics that are fun to play and perfect for creating intentional time together, whether itโs for Valentineโs Day or your weekly date night together.
These games are perfect for couples (and two players in general!) They are low on conflict and easy to learn so you can just enjoy playing together. Many of these games are specifically for two players, but others are games that can be played with more but are great with two and have been a welcome addition to date nights.ย
Pair one of these with tasty take-out, some soft music, and youโve got yourself a date!
The Best Games for Couples 2026
1. The Architects of Amytis
One of my favorite games from the past year is also an excellent date night choice. Playfully competitive without being mean. The Architects of Amities blends drafting and city building into a smooth head to head puzzle full of clever decisions. My favorite part might just be the hidden tic-tac-toe bonus system that adds a wonderful layer of strategic sneakiness. Itโs a must play two player game!
2. Spirits of the Wild Awakening
A long time favorite is back! The new Spirits of the Wild Awakening has even more animal powers to play with. Every game weโve played has felt just a tad different as we create new combinations of cards to use. Itโs a quick two player game with fun components and clever strategy. Perfect to add to any date nightโs line up!
3. Patchwork (Revised Edition)
This classic is a game everyone should try for date night at least once. Patchwork manages to be both cozy and highly strategic. At itโs core, Patchwork is an economic game where youโll balance getting the tiles you need to fill your board with those you need to generate the income required to purchase future tiles. Itโs shockingly thinky, yet at the end of every game, itโs ultimately just fun to see the quilts you created.

4. Agent Avenue
This is a playful game of chase where each player is trying to catch the other. Youโll engage in an โI split, you choseโ style play where youโll select between two cards to offer to your opponent, one they can see, and one face down they cannot. Each card gives you different outcomes. Some have you scoot forward a few spaces, others back, while some can win or lose you the game instantly should you collect a certain number. Itโs fast fun that is incredibly addictive. Prepare to play multiple games back to back!
5. Guildlands
Guildlands is a tile placement game perfect for fans of Carcassonne. Itโs thinky without triggering brain-burn. We found it to be a lovely game at two and work well whether you like to overthink every move or just go with the flow. The shared city board becomes a fun puzzle to create as you try to maximize your point potential with each new tile you add.
6. Pergola
I love Pergola for when I want a competitive game thatโs not combative. Everyone kind of does their own thing during the game. Itโs all about point maximization and every move you make will earn you a little bit more, so youโre always working the numbers in your mind. The organic way you can grow your garden during the game makes this a romantic strategy game with a dash of creativity. Win or lose, youโll love looking at what you created.
7. Canโt Stop
When I want a chill game night thatโs just plain fun, I love playing Canโt Stop. Thereโs just something so fun about a pure, push-your-luck game. Perfect for playing while enjoying a snacking board, itโs filled with exciting โI canโt believe that happenedโ moments that keep the vibes up and the fun flowing.ย Can’t Stop is one of my favorite games to play when we don’t know what to play — it never disappoints!
8. Duck and Cover
This might feel like a surprising choice as itโs one of our favorite Family Games of the past year, but I have found it to be a really fun choice for date nights as much as it is for the family! I love that this game is both competitive and largely solitary โ no one can mess with your board and impact your decisions. And if youโve been playing the classic game with your family, date night is the perfect time to try out some of the more challenging variants for added spice!
9. Link City
My husband and I went on a kick last summer where we played Link City every night together. Itโs a wonderfully enjoyable party game that I truly think shines at two of all player counts! Youโre working together to get the most points by placing city tiles on the board, but each round you have to guess where someone chose to place them. Youโll use what you know of them and the tiles they had to place to try and determine the correct location. Itโs such a fun โI know you so wellโ experience and we laughed endlessly together!
10. The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers Trick Taking Card Game
I love a game that naturally invites you to keep playing again and again. Working through each chapter of The Two Towers Trick Taking Game is such a delight. Some chapters we breeze through, while others require a few tries and some cooperative strategy between us to figure out how to beat. This series perfectly integrates the theme with the mechanics; if youโre a Lord Of the Rings fan youโll love every second of it.
11. High Tide
If fast, light two player games are you jam, High Tide is a great choice! (Plus itโs perfect for on the go fun!) I love the wooden token pieces; they make for an enjoyable tactile experience while playing that softens any loss that might occur.
12. Penguin Party
Weโve been playing this game at all player counts but itโs been the perfect choice lately on nights where we just want some quick simple fun.
13. Cribbage
Cribbage is an under-appreciated classic when it comes to date night. This simple card game feels elevated with a nice cribbage board. Perfect for playing while sipping on a drink and enjoying a charcuterie board together.
14. Floristry
I love the fun blend of playful competition and puzzle fun with Floristry. This two player game integrates tech in a fun and simple way by having players use a phone powered button to purchase their tiles for the round. When you start the auction, the price of the flower tiles in the middle goes down by 1 every few seconds. When you want to buy, you tap your button first to get them. Players are trying to buy flowers for the lowest they can without losing out to their opponent. It pairs this fun and playful competitive aspect with a cozy puzzle building element that works really well.
15. Charcuterie
Can you think of any game better to pair with a thoughtfully crafted charcuterie board for date night? This game is positively begging for a fun themed night — start at the grocery story to gather your meats, cheeses, and fruits. Carefully arrange them on your board in the most visually appealing way, and then use those skills to do the same in the game! This is a strategic tile placement game where you’ll attempt to fulfill different challenges by creatively crafting your board, selecting the right foods to add, and rearranging as needed to satisfy the multiple points opportunities. It’s a gorgeous game perfect for foodies! Play for date night and then plan a couples party to play with up to 6 players!
