In April, we played 35 different games from new releases to old classics. Here are our picks for the best games we played last month.

Not all of the games we play make it onto social media or the blog so this is a fun way to show you what we have played behind the scenes and which games left an impression.

Kelsey’s Favorite Game: Everdell

Everdell finally made its way onto our table and it was a complete delight. I loved how wonderfully Everdell combines worker placement with tableau building without the game ever feeling too difficult or simplistic. Everdell is an excellent option for players ready to dive into more strategic, mid-weight games. I have a feeling this game, with all its cuteness and charm, is going to see a lot of play time by our family over the years.

Adam’s Favorite Game: Taverns of Tiefenthal

Taverns of Tiefenthal grew on me with every play. With each new module you add, the game starts to come together more and progresses into a really satisfying experience. As a fan of deck building games, I loved the unique spin Taverns puts on the mechanic. This was also a fun solo game! 

Kid’s Favorite Game: Similio

If I had to make a list of games my kids can’t get enough of, Similo would for sure make the top three. The digital version gets the most play time in our household. From waiting in the car during errands, restaurants, or even just chilling together on the couch at home, we seem to play the digital game multiple times a week. They’re also very excited by the Harry Potter version that was released which will be making its way into the home through a birthday or Christmas gift at some point in the future.

End of Month Awards

Family Favorite: Fireball Island The Curse of VulKar

This is one of those games that the kids just light up when playing which makes it worth all the set up and game management it requires. Fireball Island is just pure family fun and one we feel the kids are going to remember playing fondly when they’ve grown.

Best Expansion: Marvel United: Enter the Spider-Verse

Marvel United is an all around amazing family game and the Spiderman expansion Enter the Spider-Verse was an excellent addition! This expansion has been the perfect tide-over while we wait for our X-Men United Kickstarter to arrive. 

Best Puzzle Game: Burger Academy

We enjoyed the simple challenge of trying to build a burger order in the fewest possible moves. I set this up for the kids to play while they waited for breakfast and it went over so well they were sad when the food was ready.

Favorite Game to Lose at With Friends: Whirling Witchcraft

The highlight of April was getting to host our Instagram friends Will and Ash from Three Little Meeples at our place for a fun filled evening! They’re as good at games as it appears online so be prepared to lose if you have them over!

Most Surprising Game We Enjoy: Good Puppers

I was so surprised by how much we enjoyed Good Puppers! This is an adorable set collection game all about creating different dog piles and having these good puppers bury valuable bones for you to win. Easy to learn, quick to play, adorable theme. Recommend!

Most Played Game: TIE My First Adventure: Finding the Dragon & Rubik Racer – 6 times

If you are looking for a unique bedtime story to shake things up, My First Adventure: Finding the Dragon was a hit with our kids. This is a choose your own adventure style story game told through a flip the flap style book. Very creative and fun for little kids! 

Rubik Racer ended up being a very addicting speed game. We love a good slide puzzle in this house. The only downside is everyone ended up enjoying Rubik Racer so much that we wished the quality was a bit nicer. This makes for a nice  impulse purchase if you ever see it on sale.

From the Vault – Most Fun Classic Played: Five Tribes 

In our early days of our board game hobby, Five Tribes racked up tons of plays. We were worried, after so many years of not playing, that it wouldn’t hold up to our memories. Those concerns were unfounded. Five Tribes is still a stellar game!
