Stuff their Stockings with Games under $20

Small but mighty! Don’t ever let the size of a game deceive you — often these smaller games end up being my very favorites. Great for traveling while still packing an excellent strategy punch.

Gudetama / Gudetama Holiday Edition: Great for those looking for a card game to share at their holiday gathering!

This cutie trick taking game is one you’re going to want to bring to your holiday gatherings! You don’t have to win every trick, you just can’t lose the last trick. It’s all about hand management! Plays quick and supports up to 7 players, this one works really well for players both young and old! Plus the Christmas edition is too perfect! Imagine multiple generations playing this together around the table!

Stellar: Excellent for those who love beautiful two player games.

There’s something romantic about a two player game where you’re looking through your telescope into space. This is such a beautiful and clever game where you’ll play cards to try and create sets, runs, and groupings of celestial objects. Competitive but not aggressive. Thinky but not brain burning. A two player win!

Arboretum: Great for players who love nature games.

If I have a weakness it’s for beautiful card games I can play in under an hour and Arboretum fits this bill nicely. You’re creating a beautiful path for visitors to your arboretum to walk through. I love that you can learn this game quickly but then are greeted with a depth of strategy and tactics to puzzle over that keeps you coming back for more!

The Fox in the Forest: Great for players that love classic card games with a twist.

Trick taking is perhaps my favorite style of card game and Fox in the Forest re-imagines it in this excellent two player game.

For Family Gamers looking for Memorable Game Nights

Family game night is all about connecting and having fun. These games will help you create game nights you’ll remember fondly for years and years.

Junk Orbit: Great for players who love pick up and deliver challenges.

This is the kind of game you can’t stop thinking about! You’ll be picking up packages and delivering them through space by shooting them out into orbit. However far you push the packages, pushes you in the opposite direction. So you’ll need to time your deliveries well so both them and you end up where you want to be! It’s so fun!

Fuse Countdown: Perfect for the frantic speed gamers!

3…2…1… Can you defuse the bomb in 10 minutes? This game will get your heart PUMPING! You work together to roll and assemble dice into the correct combinations to complete cards. Fuse Countdown brings in Spark Cards to challenge even the most veteran Fuse players. The thrill you feel when you stop that clock with just seconds to spare — unmatched! It has been an absolute BLAST to play!

Lanterns: Perfect for players who love a puzzly game!

You’ll place lake tiles into the center, connecting them with previously placed tiles, to gain lantern cards which you’ll use to create sets and turn them in for points. This game is incredibly beautiful and so classic — it’ll draw you back for play after play.

Gravwell: Great for those who love a scrappy race along a track!

Can you escape a black hole? You’ll have to play your cards right to push, pull, and thrust your ship out of the clutches of the Gravwell. Your ship travels towards the nearest object, so you can go forward or backward depending on how things shift. We have had Gravwell for years and still love the challenge of trying to anticipate your opponents’ moves so you can plan your own escape. The new version now supports up to 6 players and introduces ship powers!

Birdwatcher: A game for those who love cozy set collection.

This quick set collection game finds you out in the jungle trying to take pictures of birds-of-paradise. Games play smoothly with quick turns that provide enough strategic elements to keep the game interesting without it becoming too difficult. We highly recommend making your own bird calls every time you use an action to lure birds to your tree.

World’s Fair 1893: Great for players looking for a beginner Euro.

A charming and educational game! You’re an organizer of the 1893 World’s Fair and must spread your influence throughout the fair and increase your reputation to win! This is an excellent entry point into Euro board games with smooth as butter game play.

Solo Adventures for a Party of One

I credit Renegade’s solo line with changing my mind on solo games. For the longest time I didn’t think I enjoyed them, but then I found that when I have a thematic, immersive, and strategically interesting game designed specifically for the solo player, well then they are actually quite lovely!

Warp’s Edge: Perfect for gamers who love a video game feel.

This is one of the best solo board games I have ever played. It thrusts you right into the action! This isn’t another solo puzzle, it’s a full fledged thematic game experience! Each time I’m completely taken in by the theme and feel like I’m warping through time and taking on a space fleet in this bag building masterpiece.

Legacy of Yu: Great for players who love a narrative element in their game.

This game’s narrative campaign nicely moves you through the resettable campaign and keeps you invested through each challenge. Each game will have you either barely losing or barely winning and enjoying every moment of it all.

Wreckland Run: For the gamer who loves a Mad Max feel.

For the solo gamer that loves dice and destruction, Wreckland Run is one not to miss. Upgrade your vehicle, destroy enemies, and take on the big boss to advance thru the seven game campaign. With variable drivers and vehicle combos to try, be ready to start up your engines again and again after each campaign.

For the Strategists on Your List

Give them something that will really have them hunched over the table, looking for that perfect next move.

Crusaders Thy Will Be Done: Excellent for players who love upgrading their actions.

I’m a sucker for a rondel and Crusaders is the one that truly kickstarted that love affair. Easy to learn, smooth turns, exciting game play, and oh so deliciously tough choices. This game is one of my favorites in our collection and is a forever recommend!

Robo Rally: For the players that dream of having their own robot.

Few games so perfectly capture the theme of robot programing quite like Robo Rally! There are tons of challenging courses that will have you scratching your head trying to get your robot through all the check points. And when all else fails, you can always just shoot your opponents with your laser.

Ex Libris: A next step game that will be prefect for games who love placement puzzles and puns.

Get ready to run your own magical library. From the puntastic book titles to the kooky magical assistants the theme is such a fun element of this game. Sending your assistant out to various locals to collect the best books to craft a carefully curated collection. The game requires careful planning to do well, but simple turns make it a great next-step games for families.

Search for Lost Species: Excellent for Your Logic Puzzlers!

It’s a race to discover where the Lost Species are on the island! If you loved Clue growing up and are looking for all that fun in a game fit for the modern era, Lost Species is going to be your jam. I love how much control you have over where you look and what information you are trying to discover. The app integration helps you make sure you never misinterpret your findings.

Search for Planet X: For Your Space Explorer Detectives.

Would you rather search the heavens for a planet than the shoreline for an animal? The Search for Planet X created the blueprint for The Search for Lost Species and brings all the logical deduction fun set in space. We love the thrill of progression that builds as players discover more and more about objects orbiting Planet X and come closer to discovering its location.

Raiders of the North Sea: For your Worker Placement Warriors!

The action selection in Raiders of the North Sea is one of my favorites! You must place a worker on an open space to take an action, then remove a worker from an occupied space for your last action. Often you’re caught in the delicious dilemma of needing to take two actions but not in the order available! Different workers are needed to take different actions too so get ready to plan your moves out before heading into the village to raid for goods.

Acquire: Great for the weekend real estate tycoons.

This is the best classic real estate game (sorry, Monopoly). You’ll invest in businesses, merge them, reinvest in new ventures, and grow your stocks to acquire the greatest wealth and win. Renegade’s version gives this classic game a modern glow up with huge component upgrades from the last available edition. We don’t play too many economic games but this one is a collection essential.

For The Saturday Morning Cartoon Lovers

One of our top tips for helping someone in your life get into board games is selecting a theme they’re excited about. A game featuring favorite characters is a great place to start!

These games combine beloved characters with one of our favorite board game mechanics: Deck building! Each approaches deck building in a thematic way appropriate to the characters you’re playing!

My Little Pony: Adventures in Equestria Deck-Building Game
Great for those who love work together.

Teamwork and friendship are the keys to success here! You’ll work together to travel to different locations throughout Ponyville, complete tasks, and overcome obstacles. This is every bit as cute as you hope a My Little Pony game would be while still providing a unique deck building landscape.

Transformers: The Deck Building Game
Great for those who wants both a competitive and cooperative game

This deck builder is more than meets the eye as players can choose to roll out and play a competitive or cooperative games. Transform and move around to take down Decepticons. If playing as the good guys isn’t your thing there are expansions that let you do try your hand at villainy.

G.I.Joe: The Deck Building Game: Great for GI Joe fans or anyone wanting a challenging cooperative deck builder

If you want to stand a chance at defeating COBRA you will have to work together. This deck-builder is challenging, but beatable when you work together which matches the GI Joe property wonderfully.

Power Rangers: The Deck Building Game: Prefect for the player who likes to go head to head

If you love Power Rangers all your favorite things are in this game from the classic Rangers, to fan favorite villains like Rita Repsulsa, and even the Megazord.
