Family Board Game Gift Guide: Tested by Our Family of 9

Playing board games all year long is literally our job, and picking the best ones for our Family Board Game Gift Guide is one of my favorite parts of it!

Every year, we sit down together and ask one simple question: which games truly won us over? The ones we pulled off the shelf again and again. The one that had everyone asking to play one more time before bed. The one that lived on the table for weeks at a time.

Honestly, this list could have been a mile long! So we narrowed it down to the games that gave our family the very best experience around the table. Whether you are shopping for the holidays, a birthday, or just something new to play together, these are the games we think will make your next family game night the best one yet.

New to board games? You’re in the right place! We’ve included a few tried-and-true classics we recommend to everyone. They make wonderful gifts any year, and they’re the perfect, friendly way to welcome your family into the world of board games.

Tried and True Classics

If you aren’t sure where to start in your board game journey, these games are wonderful jumping off points that have stood the test of time. Whether you’re playing it for the first time or the 100th, they’re still just as fun.

Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride feels like a cross between puzzle and adventure. You’re secretly racing to connect train routes before anyone else does. It’s simple enough for kids to play but strategic enough that adults actually care who wins. It’s responsible for getting millions into the modern board game hobby and is a game every collection should have. Ages 8+

Azul

A beautiful drafting game, Azul is one of those games that looks fancy enough to leave out on the coffee table but is easy enough for anyone to learn. There’s something so satisfying about building your own tile pattern and hearing those chunky pieces click into place. It’s beautiful, relaxing, and quietly competitive in the best way. Ages 8+

Splendor

Splendor is all about collecting gems to build your own empire. It’s quick to learn but surprisingly strategic, and the kind of game where everyone goes quiet while they plan their next move. There’s a reason this one keeps finding its way back to the table! Ages 8+

Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a tile-laying game where the board grows right in front of you, one little city and road at a time. It’s peaceful and easy to learn, but there’s always that quiet tension of who’s going to claim the best spot. If your family enjoys puzzles and a bit of friendly rivalry, this one hits the sweet spot. Ages 8+

New Favorites

Piles

This one is pure fast-paced chaos in the best way. No waiting for your turn, no long rules to explain, just pure adrenaline as you frantically swap cards to try to complete your piles. It plays up to eight players, making it a great option when you have a large crowd. Ages 6+

Frosted Blooms

One of the prettiest games we played this year. Each round you take a tile from the market and then figure out the best place for it, building a tulip garden one piece at a time while balancing points now with bigger goals for the end. The rules are simple, every turn feels satisfying, and it’s quick enough to get played on a weeknight. Ages 8+

Wingspan Pocket

Wingspan Pocket takes everything we love about Wingspan and packs it into a smaller, faster game. You still collect birds and build those satisfying combos, but each turn you just activate one row of cards, and the bird powers are shown with simple icons so younger players can follow along. It plays in about 30 minutes, costs about a third of the original, and travels easily. If the big box has always felt like too much, this is the perfect place to start. Ages 8+

Trinket Trove

Don’t be fooled by the adorable cover; this game has a ton of strategy combined with its whimsy. Collect the best sets to score big, but getting items is tricky, especially since you have to give some away when you bid to take new trinkets. This plays great at 4, 5, & 6 and has been the best hidden gem we discovered this year. Ages 7+

Mountain Goats Legacy

A great first legacy game for any family since it is a 10-game campaign where nothing is destroyed, and players can drop in or out as needed. Each game unlocks unique rules and new surprises, adding a fun twist to the gameplay as you progress through a short narrative. With games taking less than 30 minutes to finish, this is a legacy game that can actually be completed. One of the best dice games we played this year with tons of hidden math training for younger players. Ages 6+

Our Favorites

Duck and Cover

A simple card game with a solitaire feel. I love that everyone is at once competing with each other but very much so playing their own game. You can play it as a winner take all single round style, or a multi-round series with the best score winning. One of our most played games of the year. (If players know their numbers, they can play very easily right along with everyone else even if the strategy required to win isn’t there yet.) Ages 6+

Foxy

An easy and fast memory game perfect for young and old alike! You can give it a try today by playing along with me on our YouTube channel! Ages 6+

Toy Battle

A two player war game that manages to be both cute and cunning. I absolutely love the challenge of choosing the right toy for your current mission and that you choose from the multiple included maps for a new feel each game. Ages 7+

The Hobbit: There and Back Again

I absolutely adore this game! There and Back Again retells the story of The Hobbit in 8 unique roll-and-write adventures. I cannot get over how the roll-and-write boards come as a lay-flat book for each player! I need this to be the standard moving forward because it’s just incredible. The game is not a campaign; you can play the eight roll & writes in any order you want as many times as you’d like. Ages 8+

Flip 7

Flip 7 might be the easiest game on this list to teach and one of the hardest to put away. Flip cards one at a time and stop whenever you want, but flip a number you already have and you bust. It’s pure push-your-luck fun that handles a big group, and the whole table groans and cheers together on every flip. Ages 6+

Trio

This is the best memory game for families to play together. This game is never played just once when it comes to the table, it is that fun. The rules are so simple that kids play it on their own all the time. The best part is there is an instant win condition that feels great when you can pull off an unexpected victory. Trust us on this one, it will be a hit. Ages 5+

Spots

This push your luck dice game about collecting dogs has been in our family’s top ten games all time since it came out. For a game so simple, there is a ton of variety in gameplay from numerous action cards. We have played this well over 40 times and have yet to get tired of this game. Ages 8+

Survie the Island

One of our long time favorite family games got a much overdo and perfectly executed redesign and now she’s back and ready to delight this next generation. You’ll love encouraging your kids to get their people on the boat to safety only to sick the water monsters after them and crush their dreams.  Ages 7+

Cover Your Assets

This game has a near 100% success rate with people having a fun time playing. Quick to learn, simple to play, high amounts of table talk and player engagement. This is a perfect family card game and should be a staple in every game collection. Ages 6+

Quacks

Push your luck fun with high variability in the ingredient powers makes this the best bag building game of all time. Ages 10+

Cascadia

Our favorite game is the peaceful drafting puzzle genre. It’s calm, beautiful, and endlessly replayable since the scoring cards change each game. Adam enjoys it so much he plays it solo when winding down at night. Ages 7+
We highly recommend the kids version as well, Cascadia Junior.

Ticket to Ride Legends of the West

The most epic adventure for Ticket to Ride fans! This is a Legacy game, meaning you and your family will embark on a multi-game campaign where you will alter, change, and create your own unique game board as you play through the story. No one’s experience playing the game will be the same as yours! This is not a normal game, it’s an epic experience. Ages 10+
