7 Great Flip and Write Board Games

One of our favorite style of games to play as a family are flip and writes. These games are similar to roll and writes — games where you roll a set of dice and mark things off your player sheet.

Flip and writes are a similar concept except instead of dice you’ll use cards. Flipping over a card gives players a new option to write down on their player sheet. In many ways, Flip and Writes remove some of the more random elements that come from the dice in roll and writes but are still just as fun if not quite as unpredictable.

Any of these seven games are excellent options to play with family or friends and ones we reach for again and again!

1. Silver and Gold

One of our most played games! Silver and Gold has you working to amass the most treasure by crossing off polyomino shapes on your player cards to complete them. It’s easy to learn and fun for all ages!

2. Super Mega Lucky Box

This is perfect for anyone who loves bingo! Mark numbers off on your cards. Complete rows and columns to earn bonuses and complete cards quickly. We love to take this one when we go on trips because the spirit of Bingo is something everyone loves.

3. Explorers

Explorers feels both like a flip and write and a board game. Everyone starts from the same spot on their board, but then goes on their own expedition of their lands. Landscape cards determine where every player can move. You’ll work to travel around and find keys to unlock temples, gems, resources, and other provisions on your map.

4. Next Station London

Next Station London is delightfully tricky! You’re redesigning the underground network in London. With each new station card revealed you must draw a new section, trying to optimize connections, see as many sights and possible, and get under the Thames.

5. Kokoro

Kokoro is great for bigger families. Supporting up to 8 players, you’ll draw paths on your forest map to connect various locations together to gain favor of the forest guardians. It’s simple fun that will have you puzzling the best way to construct your paths game after game.

6. Cartographers

Cartographers has you mapping out the territory of the Kingdom. Our favorite element of this game is how players must pass their sheets to the players on their left and right so they can draw monsters in your path. It’s a great bit of player interaction that can really set you back if you don’t draw your territory wisely! You can play Cartographers with almost any size group! (Though we think 2-6 players is best.)

7. Welcome To…

Welcome To…my personal favorite flip and write! It’s all about designing the best town in the US. You’ll number the streets, add pools to houses, build parks, and race to complete public goals to earn points.

It’s quick to play, simple to learn, and with tons of strategies to employ, you’ll never get bored!
