January Recap

January is one of my favorite months of the year! Setting goals, looking ahead with hopeful anticipation for the year ahead, and getting everything off to a good start energizes both myself and Adam! The past few weeks have been jam packed with all the good stuff and these were the highlights as well as three favorite games we played.

We started the year off strong with lots of Pickleball. Adam and I have loved playing pickleball for the past 6 years and have made it a goal to get our whole family hooked! This is a great starter paddle set if you want to try this fun sport out for yourself!

Adam celebrated his birthday with his annual favorite games picture. I swear out of all the photos he takes each year, he looks the happiest in this one. You can read all about the games he chose for this year here.

Shortly after Adam, our son celebrated his 8th birthday. His Crazy Cart has been a total hit!

Our whole family has been working through the King of Tokyo games and expansions. This is a game we’ve had in our collection for years and years and it’s been tons of fun to get it back out, now with our kids, and make new memories with it together.

When we weren’t playing games with the kids, Adam and I were playing a bunch of two player games. We rounded up a lot of our favorites for this year’s date night games post.

For our homeschool, I’ve been working really hard to find ways to add in more dynamic and fun practice for our emerging readers. One of those ways has been with language games. Clover Leap has been a favorite of our boys!

Last year we felt that we were so busy with life, work, and welcoming a new baby, that we didn’t get the chance to enjoy some of the things we love in our city, mainly the beach. We’ve made it a family goal this year to make more room for both quick stops and lazy afternoons at our favorite beach haunts. We got in not one but two visits this month — one was to watch the sunset together which is always so healing.

Thanks to a disappointing few plays of a new game, when we put it in the cull box, we decided that it was time for a new year cull. We went through each game in our home and culled over 130 games! It felt good to look through them and thin out the herd. Read all about our culling process here.

We also somehow managed to fit in a couple days at Disney World! Taking so many people to Disney is always a bit of a challenge but we’re finding our groove nicely and hit up three parks! The kids’ favorite by far was Hollywood Studios which I think we’ll be visiting quite a bit in the coming months.

Three Favorite Games Played in January

Quicksand

We’ve been loving this cooperative real time game! You work together to flip the sand timers to the end of the path without their time running out. Simple yet tricky and great for the whole family.

Dominion App

Dominion was one of our earliest additions to our game collection when we really started getting into this hobby. But with our love of Marvel Legendary, we could only allow one deck building game to overtake our lives. The new iOS app has been fantastic for Adam to get in his Dominion fix — he can have all the cards from every expansion and not take up a single inch of shelf space!

Planet Unknown
