When kids hit age seven, they’re really on the cusp of enjoying a large portion of the board games available.
Many games list age 8+ on the box and often times seven year olds can play the game just fine — especially towards the latter half of age 7. When choosing games for kids of this age, we try to think of where they are developmentally. On average, 7 year olds have a slightly longer attention span, are still beginning to read though many may be excelling in this area as well, and they are excited to try newer less “kid” feeling things as they start to feel more like “big kids.”
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite games to play with 7 year olds. Kids are all unique and develop at their own pace, so if your child isn’t ready to play these games yet, that’s okay! Also, please remember that these games are by no means only for 7 year olds and can be a great fit for kids both younger and older!
There are tons of great games kids can play on their own. Whether you are looking for a solo logic challenge they can work through or a board game they can play without adult supervision. These games are great for helping kids build confidence by allowing them to work through challenges on their own and for when mom and dad need a break.
My kids and I played Dream Quest recently and had a blast. Dream Quest is a story telling adventure game designed for a parent and child to do together where your choices impact the story you tell. It’s a great choice for families who love choose-your-own-adventure style books and are looking for a unique activity to play together.
One of our favorite styles of games you play are mystery games. These are games that function kind of like escape rooms where you are looking for clues and completing puzzles to solve a mystery.
We recently had the chance to play Mystery House which is a unique game in the mystery/escape room style genre.
Mystery House plays like a 3D escape room. Instead of using cards, your game board is the box, or “house.”
