Growing up, memory games were always some of my most favorite. 

I remember my mother telling me how when I was just a little kid I would play game after game of memory matching against her until she could no longer beat me. To this day, I still love to play them and now have the pleasure of playing them with my own children.

I believe that memory games are not only a fun game to play, but also an incredibly useful educational tool to help young minds learn. So I’m always on the lookout for great ones to add to our shelves, and luckily for my children, the selection is far superior than my glory days of “guess and flip” tiles. 

Now they have games with a working carousel! And yes, it sounds as amazing as you’d think!

I’m sitting there, watching my opponent. They’re analyzing the board. I look at their eyes, fixed on the board, and try to see what they’re looking at. 

“Is it my space? Surely it can’t be my space.” 

I glance back at my hand, with just a 3 and a 4 and a single forrest card I only have one option left on the board to place my hut this round. If he goes there’ll I’ll be out of options. Surely he won’t go there. It’s only the third round and the available spaces are plentiful. 

He grabs his hut and begins to lay down his cards. 

What do you look for in a great kid game? 

For us, it’s all about three things:

1. The game must engage our kids so that they want to play long enough to finish it. 
2. It must teach them how game mechanics work in a fun way so they learn and grow in their gaming ability while playing.
3. It has to be enjoyable enough so that we as parents don’t want to run for the hills when our kids bring it to the table.
