Competition is a great thing. 

Whether its board games, sports, or even academics, healthy competition helps prepare kids for life’s challenges as they must exert effort for results, stick with things even when it gets tough, and learn to manage both success and failure. 

If you have kids yourself, you have probably seen first hand that losing gracefully does not exactly come naturally. And if you watch professional sports, you know losing is not something made suddenly easy in adulthood. 

Losing gracefully, as with most things, starts in the home. Teaching respectful sportsmanship in the home is of great importance and board games are a great place to start and continue learning those lessons.

We’ve been playing our way through the Lord of the Rings trick taking game; it’s a fantastic game and has earned our Top Choice seal! You work together to complete your way through the story of the Fellowship of the Ring by accomplishing different quests and challenges in a campaign-like experience. Speed Quick Rules 💨 ⬇️ Speed is a fun game Speed Quick Rules 💨 ⬇️  Speed is a fun game for two players. All you need is one standard deck of cards! How to play Speed:  Goal: Be the first to get rid of all your cards.  Setup:
Deal each player 20 cards: 5 cards in hand + 15 in a face-down draw pile.  Place two face-down 5-card side stacks in the center.  Place two single cards face down between them  How to Play:
Play cards one at a time onto either play pile—must be 1 rank higher or lower (e.g., 6 on 5 or 7).  No turns—play as fast as you can.  Refill your hand up to 5 cards from your draw pile anytime.  Stuck?
Flip a new card from each side stack to refresh the center piles.  If side stacks are gone, reshuffle center piles to restart.  🏆 Win:

Quick Rules for How to Play Trash: Trash, also ca Quick Rules for How to Play Trash:  Trash, also called Garbage, is an easy card game great for socializing. You can play with 2-6 players. Use one deck of cards for 2 players and add an additional deck for 4 and another for 6 players.  Your goal is to be the first player to complete your layout of ten cards, Ace through 10. (A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)
Jacks are wild 
Queens and Kings automatically end your turn.  Shuffle and deal 10 Cards to each player. Arrange them face down into two rows of 5. Put the remaining cards in the center of the table to form the draw pile and choose a starting player.  On your turn, draw the top card from the draw pile or discard pile and place it in it’s correct location in their layout, replacing the face down card there.  Flip over the face down card and, if possible, place it in its correct location in the layout. Jacks are wild and can be placed in any number location. If you reveal a number for a location held by a face up Jack, replace the jack and add it to a new location.  Repeat this process until you either reveal a number you already have in its correct location, or reveal a Queen or a King. Discard this card. Now it’s the next player’s turn.  Play continues until someone completes their layout of 10 cards. All players take their remaining turns until it gets back to the starting player, ending the round.  You can choose to end the game there, or you can shuffle and deal out the cards for the next round, this time only dealing out 9 cards to the winner of the previous round. A player who has won twice will only be dealt 8 cards. And so on.  Continue until a player has only one location and fills it with an Ace to win the whole game.

While not perfect (I really wish it had six adjustable shelves!) it’s one of the best options for larger, heavier games and honestly, I love it for everything else too. A classic beauty! You can always use pretty bins or get a smaller, narrower shelf like the Billy for your small game collection.  Would only having 5 shelves bug you? Or do you like the more open look?

I don’t know how it happened that they became the official “board game shelf” but it’s time we helped new gamers with growing collections find a better solution.  Do you agree? (Which is a LOT!)  Games at this stage mean intentional time together, (nothing better than mom and dad’s undivided attention!) they get extra excited to pick the game, and their confidence beams out of them during play! Which is why it’s important to choose games they’ll love that also help their growing minds and that you’ll enjoy playing too! (You never know which one you might get stuck playing on repeat!)
