How to Play Super Bowl Squares
If you want to learn how to play Super Bowl Squares for this years game, I’m sharing a free printable you can use along with everything you need to know!
I love an excuse to gather, and the Super Bowl is probably the best non-holiday event of the year to do so! It’s the perfect day to hang out with friends and family, enjoy great food, and soak in the excitement and energy of the big game. Everyone’s a football fan this day!
Since games can run long and attention spans wane quickly after the first quarter, we like to play a few games we play to help keep everyone’s interest locked on the game from start to finish!
One of our favorites is Super Bowl Squares! This is a popular game that requires absolutely no knowledge of football to play and will be fun for everyone; even those that are only there for the Jalapeno Popper Dip!
How to Play Super Bowl Squares
Super Bowl Squares is an easy and fun game where players can win prizes or money based on the scores in the football game.
If you play for money, you have players either purchase squares individually or have a flat buy in that gets you X number of squares. When we play, we just put in around $5 per person and divide the total number of squares up by the players playing. (We give any extra squares out to the youngest players) Or you can have a few different prizes that can be won. Playing cards, fun treats or drinks, gift cards — whatever feels the most fun for your group.
Super Bowl Squares Rules
For this game, you’ll need a 10×10 grid of squares. You can make this quickly by hand, or use our free printable template.
On the top of the grid, you’ll write the name of one of the teams. For this upcoming superbowl we’ll write the Chiefs here. And on the left side of the grid you’ll write the other team, in this case, the Eagles.
Before the game begins, divide the squares among your players. Players will take turns choosing squares to write their names inside. Each of the 100 squares will have a name written in it and will determine the winner of each quarter by matching the last digit of each team’s score.
Then randomly assign the numbers 0-9 to each column and row. These will be how you determine your winners!
(Alternatively, you can add the numbers sequentially to the columns and rows so players know which squares they are choosing and can try to pick strategically based on common football scores. Both ways are fun! Try using a snake draft when choosing squares so players have a fair chance at the best combinations.)
Determining Your Winners
At the end of each quarter, you’ll determine a winner by looking at the current score of the game. Matching the last digit for each teams’ score with that same digit on the grid, the winner is the player whose name is in the square where those two numbers meet.
So if, at the end of the first quarter, the score is Chiefs 14, to Eagles 7, you’ll look at the 4 column for the Chiefs, and the 7 row for the Eagles and find the name in the square where those numbers match. The name in that square is your winner for the quarter.
If you’re playing for a share of the prize money, split the pot with the first, second, and third quarter winners receiving 20% of the prize money and the fourth quarter winner receiving 40%.
Example:
Total Prize Amount: $100
First Quarter Winner: $20
Second Quarter Winner: $20
Third Quarter Winner: $20
Fourth Quarter (Game’s Final Score) Winner: $40
