Board Games Like Monopoly

Looking for more board games like Monopoly? We’re sharing some of our top recommendations for what to play next!

It’s likely you have played Monopoly at some point in your life.

This household classic was originally created to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. It quickly (and ironically) became a popular celebration of capitalist success! It was hard to find a home that didn’t have a copy of this in their games closet.

To help you find your next favorite game, we’ve separated this list into three categories based on the main game elements found in Monopoly

Trading and Negotiation
Set Collection & Area Control

Real Estate Theme

Acquire

This game could be described as Monopoly on steroids. You’ll dive into the world of strategic investment and corporate mergers. Like Monopoly, you’ll invest in properties to increase your wealth. Players will work to grow their hotel chains while minding the shares they hold so that when hotel chains merge, the majority share holders reap the benefits.

Lords of Vegas

Develop the casinos of Vegas! You start with nothing and will work to build the biggest casinos on the strip. You can make deals to trade lots, take over casinos owned by others, or risk it all by gambling in someone’s casino to make money quick. It’s a fun an exciting game of strategy, risk, and the luck of Vegas.

Lords of Vegas will be reprinted in late 2024!

Suburbia

My toxic trait is thinking that my love of this game has made me into an accomplished city planner. Suburbia is all about creating a strong, self sufficient economic engine as you plan, build, and develop a small town into a major metropolis! Each of the tiles features different building types found in a city and your job is to use them to develop your town in such a way that it encourages population growth. Win this game enough and you’ll be wondering when you can add City Planner to your resume!

(My favorite way to play is with the app!)

Machi Koro

Machi Koro is a great option for families looking for an income generating game with something for the whole family. Players will work to purchase city cards to develop their city. Each card gives players a different action to take when a specific number is rolled. If players build their city wisely, they’ll make sure they’re doing something with each roll of the dice and can race towards victory.

If space is more your thing, check out Space Base for a similar game play.

Trading and Negotiation

Waterfall Park

If you love the trading and negotiation element of Monopoly, Waterfall Park will be right up your alley! This game is straight negotiation. Players are trying to trade and exchange their attractions to create high scoring groupings. How this game goes is truly up to the players. You can offer deals and promise future trades that you may or may not follow through on. Wheel and deal your hearts content to victory.

Bohnanza

I won’t rest until everyone knows about this wonderful card game! Plant and harvest bean cards to earn coins. I love the hand management challenge in Bohnanza — you are not allowed to rearrange your cards in your hand, you have to use them in the order that you’ve picked them up. If you can’t use them, you’ve got to find a way to trade them! Everyone is trying to come out on top and only the shrewdest of traders will be able to.

For Sale

One of our very favorite games to teach to new players. The game plays out in two phases, the first phase sees players bidding on buildings hoping to get valuable properties for a good deal. In the second phase players try to sell the buildings they won for the greatest profit. It’s one of our go-to games to play with people who “don’t like games.”

QE

This is an incredibly clever auction game. Players play as the central bank and will bid on different size companies to accumulate victory points. As the owner of the printing press, you can bid however much money you’d like to. However, you still need to watch you spend because if you printed the most money, you lose.

Set Collection & Area Control

Monopoly Deal

If I’m going to play Monopoly today, this is the version I’m grabbing. It’s a fast and fun card game that packs all the fun of Monopoly into a travel friendly set collection card game. We were all surprised by how much fun it is!

Ticket to Ride

Family game night perfection! If you haven’t played this train game yet, now is the time! Collect cards to claim routes to destinations that complete your tickets. It’s great for both young and old.

Marrakech

I love this game for families! Like monopoly, you earn money when other players land on spaces you’ve claimed. But instead of buying property, you’re claiming areas of the board by laying down your felt carpet tiles. The bigger the area you create, the more you’ll earn when someone lands on your space.

Sunrise Lane

A new favorite! Build up a residential neighborhood by grabbing the best plots of land to construct your buildings. I love that you’re trying to balance managing your cards so you have what you need to build on the board, while also working to make sure you satisfy the end game scoring conditions. The miniature house sculpts look so cute on the board — the whole game is quite charming to play.

Monopoly Chance

This is a great option if you’re really wanting to stick within the Monopoly family of games. Monopoly Chance brings a push-your-luck spin to the classic game. It can be a lot of fun and games take just 20 minutes or less to play!
